You can learn more about Detective Robert Goren by watching Law&Order: Criminal Intent which airs almost every night on USA Network. Check local listings for times, though, because they tend to change that up a bit throughout the week. There are also mini-marathons shown on Bravo every Sunday night. Background: Goren has a very checkered past. At age 7, he realized that his mommy wasn't like other mommies (she was 32 when had her break). At age 11, his father, who is now dead, left leaving his mother to care for the two sons. His mother suffers from schizophrenia and is currently institutionalized at Mt. Carmel. He visits her once a week and calls her everyday. He is estranged from his older brother, Frank Goren, who is a gambling addict.

Goren is a Desert Storm veteran. During his time in the army he worked for the Army CID as a profiler and spent time in South Korea (six months) and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart and was a sergeant while in South Korea. After the army, he joined the NYPD and worked for 4 years in Narcotics where he ran 3 sting operations (27 arrests, all led to convictions). He is accomplished at the art of working undercover as well. He joined Major Case Squad (11th Floor of One Police Plaza) and is a Detective, First Grade. His partner is Detective Alexandra Eames.

Goren is known around the NYPD as being a little ‘out there’ and appears to have some borderline symptoms of schizophrenia. He is able to work well with witnesses and suspects suffering from mental health issues because of his practice dealing with his mother. He has an intense hatred of deadbeat dads that steams from his own father’s short-comings. He played Junior Varsity basketball in high school and was an alter boy. He is a lapsed Catholic and is pro-choice. His nickname is Bobby. His mother was a librarian which may explain why he is such a bookworm. His father gambled on horses and Goren took no one with him to his father's funeral. He still talks to a friend of his father, Freddie. Freddie seems to have known Goren's father through the betting on horse races.

Personality: Goren has a very unique personality. He has a tendency to notice things about crime scenes that even the crime scene investigators miss. He’s a bookworm who knows a little of everything and speaks German and English. He is known for his unusual mannerisms such a tilting his head and broken pattern of speech. He is withdrawn generally and is rarely understood by others. He also has the ability to pick up on patterns in crime scenes and clues. He gets along with others so long as they are willing to be patient with him. Bobby is a very loyal friend who will protect those he cares about to the very end.
